About this event

Delivery Mode – Two x Full Day virtual sessions (9am to 4pm both days) - NOTE: PARTICIPANTS NEED TO ATTEND AND REGISTER FOR BOTH SESSIONS.

This is a free event designed for members of the public clinical mental health workforce in Victoria, (staff employed at Area Mental Health Services, Forensicare or mental health staff from RCH). For example, a social worker or consumer peer worker working in mental health at Austin Health. Staff from MHCSSs, ACCHOs, AOD or other partner organisations may sometimes also attend. Please note, if you do register for an event and it is not clear you are part of the intended audience, your registration will be confirmed two weeks prior to the event start date, or earlier

Note: this event has not been specifically developed with the LEW, however, the content has been developed over years with peer workers attending and providing feedback. The workshop encourages self reflection and relates the content to each participants’ own experiences of change - there is no “worker” and “client” in MI, and the consumer is seen as an equal partner at the centre of the process.

Event description

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is collaborative method for guiding conversations about change. More than a set of techniques, MI is a discipline in its own right that brings together a set of values, principles and disciplined use of skills to assist people to resolve ambivalence and deepen motivation to pursue the changes that are meaningful for them.

While the skills do take time and practice, the style of conversation is gentle, curious and comes from a place of faith in the other person. The hope is that, together, we may discover what is meaningful for this person and what choices would work best for them, knowing who they are and what they deep down really want for their future.

The event will cover:

  • Gain a clear and up-to-date understanding of MI Increase
  • Increase understanding of the change process
  • Review and practice the core skills
  • Apply the skills to the change process
  • Increase ability to work with resistance and ambivalence
  • Practice skills in working with change talk

This course is delivered online via Zoom. Interactive for mixed learning style: Combination of didactic, observation, small and large group discussion, skills practice
